How we started

The Bury Project was set up, by Churches Together in Bury, in 2019 to promote the alleviation of poverty for people in Bury (Greater Manchester) and its surrounding district.

We have charitable status and are registered as a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation).

Our main project is the Bury CAP Debt Centre, working with Christians Against Poverty to give help (free of charge) to people in difficulty with debt. The Debt Centre Manager works with local trained volunteers and we receive support from many individuals and local churches.

Whilst we operate under a Christian ethos we welcome and respect clients from all backgrounds. Debt can have a crippling effect on individual wellbeing and family life, and it is a joy to see people overcoming their difficulties and becoming debt free.

Our Mission

The Bury Project is set up for the relief of poverty for persons living in and around Bury and district.

Whilst the Bury CAP Debt Centre is our main delivery point, there is scope for other projects for the relief of poverty to be set up, depending on local needs and resources.

Debt can be emotionally draining.  becoming debt free can have many secondary benefits including much reduced stress, improved wellbeing and mental health, better family relationships, and reduced child poverty.

Our Christian Ethic

We are a Christian based organisation, as is CAP.    However our service is available to persons of all faiths and backgrounds and we operate in a welcoming and non-judgemental manner.

Offering this free debt service is an expression of the Christian faith we hold - an expression of God's concern for all mankind.

Whilst we may offer to pray for clients or advise them of the availability of local church facilities, we will never impose our faith on others or make issues of faith a condition of the service we offer.
