How we help with debt issues.

Our main project is the CAP Debt Centre.  We have a paid Debt Centre Manager and a Debt Coach, both of whom are trained by CAP to work with clients in a friendly and empathic way to help people out of debt.  All debt advice is provided by CAP which is a well respected and established charity dealing with debt issues.

We also have volunteer befrienders who can give additional personal support and help clients feel safe.

HOW  DEBT  HELP  WORKS

1. Phone CAP for help - 0800 328 0006

The first step is to phone Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to apply for help.   They will note your details and refer you to your nearest CAP Debt Centre.   If you live in Bury that will be us.

They will listen to you and answer any immediate questions you may have.

2. Meet with the Debt Coach

The Debt Coach will contact you and arrange to meet with you. They will have time to listen to your circumstances and explain in detail how they can help you deal with your debt issues. They will need detailed information about your debt and will explain what is expected from you in the process.

The Debt Coach will usually be accompanied by a volunteer befriender to provide added personal support.

3. Get a Plan of Action

Based on the information you provide, CAP will make an affordable budget plan and outline what action they recommend to take to get you our of debt.  This will be explained to you by the Debt Coach.

Sometimes alternative advice is given to become debt free.  Whatever advice is given will be what the experts at CAP consider to be your best way forward.

4. Work with the plan

The decision to proceed with the debt advice remains with you.  If you go ahead with a budget plan CAP will interact with your lenders on your behalf and deal with any issues arising. You just need to keep to your budget until you become debt free.

Your Debt Coach will still be available if your circumstances change or you need any further help.

5. Celebrate when you become Debt Free

In due course, when you become debt free, celebrate your new financial freedom.

Frequently Asked Questions / Issues

My creditors are threatening legal action.

CAP can contact them on your behalf.

I am being evicted for non-payment of rent.

Don't just ignore it.  Let us get advice.

I owe my friend, and they want their money.

CAP is not able to deal directly with debts to family or friends, only debts to companies or recognised organisations.  Our advice would be to budget your finances and agree a repayment timetable.

How much do you charge for your services?

DON'T WORRY.

Both The Bury Project and CAP offer their services free of charge.  We are funded by personal donations, donations from local churches, and other grant funding.
